It is the Council that has to approve the various sections of the AGAR and this includes the declarations that form the Annual Governance Statement. This session will look at each of those statements, will discuss what they mean, what should be done by a local council to meet them and how they should be dealt with at the meeting. We will also discuss what should be done by way of declaration where a council finds that it hasn't met them.

After the Election – What, When, Why, How! (aimed at councils in the Doncaster, Rotherham and Craven areas that have just had ordinary elections)

Councils will experience varying situations after the elections. Some will have all seats filled, some will be uncontested but will have sufficient people nominated to be quorate and some will not be able to proceed because of being inquorate. This session advises councils what they need to do after the election, irrespective of the situation – we look at what happens if there is a lack of a quorum, the legal process for election of chairman, declarations of acceptance of office, completion of registers and lawful appointment via co-option.

‘Managing council employees: How to address capability - CANCELLED TO BE RE-SCHEDULED

Capability refers to an employee's ability to perform the work expected of them to the required standards. A council's employees are generally its most valuable (and most expensive) asset so, it is important that the council ensures that work is being performed as it should be and what action it should take if standards are not met.

This short, interactive session provides guidance and the basic tools for councils to ensure compliance with the law and best practice in addressing matters related to capability (i.e. an employee's skill, aptitude, health or any other physical or mental quality in relation to the job that they are employed to do)
